The Diesel Truck Maintenance Parts Schedule Shops Actually Use

August 26, 2026Spare Diesel Parts

A practical replacement-interval guide for filters, injectors, turbos, cooling and suspension components on heavy-duty diesel trucks — plus the early warning signs to watch.

Service intervals worth keeping on the wall

  • Fuel filters: every 15,000–20,000 miles, sooner on poor fuel quality. Cheap insurance for the injection system.
  • Air filter: inspect every service, replace on restriction rather than mileage.
  • Oil and oil filter: per manufacturer schedule, shortened for heavy towing or long idling.
  • Coolant: test annually. Diesel coolant additives deplete long before the coolant looks bad.
  • Serpentine belt and tensioner: inspect at every service, replace as a set.

Wear items that fail with warning

Injectors give you rough idle, hard starts and rising fuel consumption before they quit. Turbos whistle, smoke or lose boost. Both are best replaced as a planned job with a remanufactured unit rather than as a roadside emergency.

Suspension and steering

Shocks, struts, bushings and steering components wear gradually, so drivers rarely notice. Uneven tyre wear and vague steering are the tells. Replace in pairs.

Cooling and exhaust

Radiators, intercoolers and EGR-related components suffer under heavy loads. A small coolant weep or a hairline crack in a charge pipe is a same-week job, not a next-quarter job.
